Vivo NEX S was launched yesterday as the company’s latest flagship smartphone. The phone brought the Apex dream to reality with its pop-up selfie camera and truly bezel-less screen. There’s no notch, no annoying bezels disrupting what Vivo calls Ultra FullView Display.
The AI-powered smartphone comes with a dedicated hardware button that lets you activate Jovi, Vivo’s voice assistant. The screen has an in-display fingerprint scanner at the bottom corner. It has a Screen SoundCasting Technology which displays sounds from the screen. Lets find out more.
Design
Vivo really did their best with the design here, it features an aluminium alloy overall unibody. The phone has curved sides and edges to provide a firmer grip when held. The dual rear shooters are visible at top left corner in a vertical position, while the LED flash follows underneath.
Turning over to the sides, we can see the dedicated hardware button. This lets you activate Jovi and ask him anything through voice command. The device measures 8mm in thickness and is pretty heavy, weighing in at 199g overall. It’s available in only Black and Red colors, there might be other limited edition colors as well.
Display
The concept we saw on the Apex smartphone is now a reality guys. The Vivo NEX S sports an Ultra FullView screen, this means there’s no notch, no bezels, just a super tiny chin at the bottom. The screen has an in-display fingerprint scanner and doubles as the speaker as well.
It’s built around a tall 6.59-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, it’s one of the biggest we’ve seen on a “Phablet”. The screen has a resolution of 1080 x 2316 pixels and 388 pixel per inch density, which is great for its size. It dishes out a unique 19.3:9 aspect ratio and stretches up to 91.2% of the entire front.
Hardware and Software
The powerful Snapdragon 845 chip from Qualcomm is in charge here, the chip was built with a 10nm process technology, so power efficiency should be perfect. It packs 8-Cores processor which clocks at a blazing speed of 2.7GHz as well. The Adreno 630 graphics card handles graphics efficiently.
Launch all your favorite heavy apps and multitask through them all, there’s an 8GB RAM space available to handle all that. There are two variants in terms of storage space though, the standard version has 128GB, while the cheaper variant packs 256GB. There’s no option to expand further, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.
Camera
We can’t help but notice how the pop-up 8MP selfie camera which automatically elevates when you switch to selfie mode. The camera has an f/2.0 aperture and it’s AI-powered as well. While at the back, there’s a combination of 12MP + 5MP cameras. The 12MP rear camera has f/1.8 aperture, 1/2.5″ sensor size, 1.4µm pixel size, Dual Pixel PDAF.
While the 5MP shooter underneath has f/2.4 aperture and will help out in portrait mode. There’s AI onboard for Live Photos, Beauty mode, AI HDR, AR stickers. Vivo says it used AI techniques to improve scene recognition, HDR and photo composition. Other features include 4-axis OIS, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED dual-tone flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama. It can also shoot 4K videos @30fps.
Battery
Powering the Vivo NEX S is a 4000mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery with fast charging technology. With the fast charging feature, charging the battery from 0% to 100% shouldn’t take up to 1.8 hours.
