TCL Ruminates Releasing New Palm PVG100 in 2018

Palm is the super-popular PDA brand known in the early 2000s. Now the company that bought Palm Ventures Group, TCL wants to release a new budget smartphone (PVG100) before 2018 runs out. Not that this product will be spectacular; however people who don’t have much to spend on buying a very expensive phone can at least enjoy the basics of a modern smartphone.

PVG100 Design

There are rumors circulating the PVG100 will come with Bluetooth 4.2, will run on Android (Oreo) 8.1. The phone will also support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. What should we expect to find? Probably the same pebble-shaped designs, maybe card-based user interface, coupled with iconic slide out keyboard, fans used back in 2010.

The device will reportedly have Bluetooth 4.2, will run Android 8.1 Oreo, and will support 2.4GHx WiFi, meaning that it’s likely to be a budget device. The device is also reportedly launching on Verizon.

For years, apparently since the year 2010, there hasn’t been a true Palm device. Palm Pixi Plus and Palm Pre plus both had a physical keyboard and ran webOS, which is Palm’s unique operating system. This latest release will bring up to minds of fans the old Palm Ventures Group.

The latest PVG100 is expected to be the second major wake up call for PDA devices in recent years. Remember BlackBerry KeyOne and BlackBerry Key2. Fortunately, this up-coming Palm PVG100 phone with Android 8.1 Oreo has already gotten certified. It’s gotten FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and Wi-Fi Alliance certifications.

TCL is the firm that bought Palm Ventures Group in 2014 and the company hasn’t responded much about the new PVG100 device. However, Android Police has spotted the certification which you can view below.

A few months ago, TCL confirmed that a reboot smartphone will be released into the market for the public to grab, especially those familiar with the earlier Palm products.

The Big Minus

The big minus is that this device will be slow for browsing because the smartphone will only support 2.4GHz WiFi as against the 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Another minus may be the keyboard. We are not sure the next PVG100 will have a keyboard but if does, some savvy users may not warm up to it.

Will it Be Released?

There have been two attempts to notify the public about Palms PVG100. The earlier was reported in March 2018, while the latest in August 2018. Possibly, the emphasis in release reports of the PDA will serve to ensure its actual release.

Why does TCL think releasing a phone like this will do any good? Probably, the company has found a market for it, a market that will make use of just only the very minimum basics in a modern smartphone.
