How to sign a document on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using the markup tool in the Mail app. You can easily add a signature to a document and email it right on your iOS device.

You can quickly sign a document on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch via the device’s Mail app. To sign a document on your iOS device, it must be emailed in a format that can be opened and edited by the markup tool, such as PDF format.

Fortunately, the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has a way to make it so easy that it could actually become your preferred method for signing any document sent by email.

How to sign a document on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Using the markup tool, you can put your signature on any document emailed to your mail app in a valid format.

  1. If the document has not been sent to an e-mail on the Mail app of your iPhone, forward it to your address.
  2. Open the email and attachment you need to sign. You may need to tap the document first to download it.
  3. If there are lines set for editing in the document, tap them and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch should allow you to type in the information (printed name, date, or address).
  4. To actually sign the document, tap the markup symbol (the pen in a circle in the top right corner).
  5. At the bottom you should see an assortment of pens, then a plus sign (“+”). Tap the plus sign.
  6. Tap Signature.
  7. This will take you to a new signature line screen where you can draw your signature with your finger. When done, press done. This will also save your signature for the future.
  8. After pressing Done, you will be sent back to your document where you can place your signature.
  9. Once your signature is in place, hit the markup symbol at the top to lock it.
  10. Finally, hit “Done” in the upper left corner.

Note that signing a document on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch works best when it comes to a .pdf file. The markup tool may not work on some files, such as those in .docx format.
