NIMC Leads Africa’s First Mobile Identity Technology

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is pioneering Africa’s first Mobile Identity Ecosystem. This information is supplied by Secure Identity Alliance (SIA), which is the global identity and secure digital services advisory.

The body said that NIMC leverages on OSIA open standard interfaces to verify unique identities against National Identity Registry.

The OSIA initiative is supported by over 35 members who consist of industry and government organizations. It is seen as a digital public good, building a global interoperability framework that features open standard interfaces (APIs) to connect all important blocks of the identity management ecosystem.

The open standard interfaces make sure governments can select the building blocks needed from all the suppliers they choose and ensure easy connection for additional national identity ecosystem.

Some of the advantages that OSIA offers are the elimination of propriety barriers, breaking down information silos, driving innovation, and maximizing investment in existing digital infrastructure.

NIMC was developed by Commonidentity, a software company based in Africa. As part of the OSIA initiative, the Nigerian NIMC Mobile ID Ecosystem a citizen of the country to have a unique ID that can be verified against the National Identity Registry in quick time via the OSIA interface.

The app was launched in December 2020, and it has been downloaded more than 3.3 million times in about 90 days. It is said that every day, about 180,000 people download the app.

Experts believe that the OSIA initiative ushers in a new era of openness and collaboration between industry and governments across the world in a bid to solve the issue of data sharing. Moreover, with the pioneering of Africa=First Mobile ID Ecosystem by NIMC, OSIA has surely moved from the drawing board to the real world.

OSIA is ready to do more when it comes to unleashing market innovation, facilitating the implementation of multi-vendor programs, and enabling identity as a service.
