Maze Alpha X Review: meet beauty and the beast, an improved version of Maze Alpha

Maze Alpha X: An affordable powerhouse with 6GB RAM

Smartphone company, Maze blessed us with the Alpha X on last January. The Maze Alpha X is an update to the Maze Alpha, which was launched earlier last year. The new device which is also Maze’s latest flagship smartphone is a beauty and a beast. A powerful machine covered with shining glass and retails at an almost giveaway price when compared with other phones with same specs. The Maze Alpha X is affordable, brilliant and can blend into any environment looking like a king.

With 6GB RAM there’s no downtime with this smartphone, its fast and stays fast too for a long time. Alpha X boasts of 8-cores regarding processor and reaches a speed of 2.5 GHz. There’s internal storage of up to 128GB to store all your Games and Apps. This new device from Maze is perfect for heavy users and gamers as well. Thanks to its 6GB of RAM and the ARM Mali-T880 MP2 processing unit with 2-Cores. Its time to learn more about this stunning beauty, stay with me lets have a thorough review of the flagship device.

This new device has a design inspired by the Xiaomi Mi MIX, in addition to having a price according to what it offers. ENOUGH! Having said the above, let’s review its features in full.

But before I proceed, I will love to refer you to the Maze Alpha X Unboxing & First Impressions.

Maze Alpha X: Package Contents

This new Maze device comes in a very attractive box, and within it, we find the following products:

  • 1 x Maze Alpha X.
  • 1 x Power adapter.
  • 1 x USB Type-C cable.
  • 1 x Chip Ejector needle.
  • 1 x Glass Screen protector.
  • 1 x User manual.

The Maze Alpha X has a design that stands out incredibly regarding elegance we are referring to; this is due to a series of factors that we will break down below. To begin with, its slightly rounded edges which give us a feeling of softness that does not disappoint in the least, so it is quite ergonomic. On the other hand, it not only proves to be a pretty device, since it has a metallic frame that shows greater resistance.

This device has dimensions of 15.64 x 7.46 x 0.81 cm and a weighs 209 grams, a bit lighter than its younger brother is comfortable to use. It is available in a single color, black, which is perfectly combined with any environment, although we would have liked a couple of other options in this section. The color limitation on the device might be really daunting to flashy color lovers. Hopefully, their next phone will come with so many color options, or at least standard colors like Blue, Red, and Gold. Regarding its peripherals and interfaces, we have the following:

  • 1x Nano SIM dual slot
  • 1x Microphone
  • 1x Speaker
  • 1x  USB Type-C port
  • 1x Micro SD card slot
  • 1x 3.5mm headphone jack

The premium device comes exclusively with a shining anti-fingerprint rear glass that the company boasts of, but I still have my fingerprints on the back of the phone during usage, just that it is minimal when compared with other glassy phones. While out and about, the sun reflection at the back of the Alpha X is quite stunning. It creates shinning white lines which are very beautiful.

At first glance, you will spot the uniqueness of the Maze Alpha X, a rare overall black metal covered with glass. Less is more, which is more evident with the plain back design that is breathtaking nonetheless.

The fingerprint scanner is still at the front just like the first Alpha smartphone. Leaving only the rear camera, LED Flash and the Maze logo at the back. The rear camera sits pretty at the extreme top left corner, with the single-led flash by the side. The Maze logo was written in white at the bottom middle, as the exquisite smartphone is only available in pure black. Sounds weird? I don’t think so really; it looks simply breathtaking in black.

You might also want to get a phone case for the device; no one likes a cracked back glass on a phone. So we recommend this cover to protect your Maze Alpha X smartphone glass from shattering. The Maze Alpha X comes with a screen protector, so you don’t have to worry about the front screen at all.

A sleek rear glass can make the device fall easily when not placed on a flat surface.

It’s not entirely bezel-less which is a little disappointing for a flagship smartphone in this present time. Nevertheless, its IPS LCD FHD+ capacitive touchscreen from LG is quite stunning. The physical home button at the bottom bezel triples as the fingerprint sensor, which unlocks the device in 0.1 second and back button when taped once or holds to return home. The selfie camera also sits pretty at the bottom left corner of the bottom bezel as well.

It has narrow side and top bezel which is almost invisible, dishing out a stunning display. The 5.99-inch screen stretched all the way to the extreme top, reaching 71.86% screen-to-body ratio. The screen is crystal clear and sharp, boasting of 2160 x 1080 Pixels in resolution and 403 Pixel Per Inch density. The screen resolution has a 24-bit color depth with an overall In-Cell multi-touch display, offering visuals with details.

Additionally, the screen is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5, making the screen rigid and solid. But you still have to use screen protector it comes with to avoid stories that touch. Overall I will give the screen an 8/10, the display is brilliant no doubt. But it isn’t a total bezel-less, and I’m not really a fan of the physical home button. Nonetheless, the visuals from the screen will make you forget about the bottom bezel.

Hardware and Software

The beast behind this beauty is the MediaTek Helio P25 MT6757CD chipset with 64-bit Processor. It boasts of 8 cores (Octa-Core) reaching a speed of 2.5GHz and a 16nm process technology. In charge of the graphics department is the ARM Mali-T880 MP2 processing unit with 2-Cores and speed of 900MHz. In terms of performance, the Maze Alpha X is a pure beast, it offers 6GB RAM space as well for fast multitasking. The 6GB RAM reaches a memory speed of 1600MHz, helping you standby heavy apps.

AnTuTu scores a score of 70,706 points, while Geekbench 4 rates the performance of a single core in 914 and multi-core in 3241. However, these results are not too amazing, but the 2160P screen and the 6GB of RAM help keep it in the activities, cases where there is some delay are rare.

In the game section the Maze Alpha X is modest. Asphalt Xtreme, Bullet Force, World of Tanks and Gunship Battle run perfectly well without issue.

Sensors on the phone include proximity, accelerometer, ambient light, e-compass, gyroscope, hall and the fingerprint sensor I mentioned earlier. In terms of internal storage space of the Maze Alpha X, there are actually two versions; the standard version with a massive 128GB internal storage and the much affordable variant with 64GB internal storage. Of course, both versions are upgradeable up to 256GB using the microSD slot.

Maze Alpha X runs on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system and will receive an update to 8.0 Oreo soon. It comes with a modified UI displaying a beauty interface that is quite catchy. Gamers alike will enjoy gaming with this beast so I will give it a 9/10. It offers one of the best overall performance for a smartphone that retails just below $250. You won’t experience any lagging or a ‘slow mode’ when operating and navigating through this beast.

The smartphone variants differ in sensors, the 64GB variant carries a SONY IMX258 sensor while the 128GB variant sports OmniVision’s OV16880 sensor which boasts of f/1.7 aperture lens. The camera should do justice to all your portrait photographs and scenery shots. Features on the camera include autofocus, touch focus, scene mode, continuous shooting, exposure compensation, face detection and a host of others. There’s Dual-LED Flash besides the camera to help compliment shoots in the low light environment.

For selfies, they both have 8MP Sony IMX219 selfie shooters for your amazing selfies. Situated at the bottom bezel and boasting of a f/2.0 aperture which captures the best of selfies. It has no front Flash so taking selfies or video calls in the extremely low light environment might be very daunting. But when you get some good lighting or try increasing the screen brightness, you would be surprised with the selfies.

Will give the camera an 8/10 rating, the rear camera is more than perfect with f/1.7 aperture and in a nice position. However, the selfie camera is not in the most flattering position, sitting at the bottom bezel. Smartphone manufacturers do this to achieve a bezel-less screen with no top notch, but is it comfortable? Well it might take getting use to, but it is kinda weird looking at the bottom bezels for a selfie, so you can just turn the phone upside down and shoot your selfies using any of the volume buttons.

Maze Alpha X is powered by a 3900mAh Lithium Polymer battery that is Non-removable. Easily charge the device from 0% to 100% in just 1.30 hours, thanks to the fast battery charging technology. Although, it doesn’t support the wireless charging technology, but I’m optimistic Maze will come through with their next update.

In the above, the battery is on 6% and it says the battery will get fully charged in the next 1:30 minutes, which is below 2 hours. That sounds impressive.

The battery on the Alpha X should last you the whole day even on heavy usage. The good thing is you can charge it up in a short time, so I will give the battery 7/10 rating.

Other Features

The phone has notification led, which is a plus. It shows red when charging and blinking blue when you have a notification.

For connectivity, it comes with 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE support, through the dual nano-sim slots.
