Despite its several challenging years amid the coronavirus pandemic, currency depreciation and economic slowdown, Nigeria’s ICT sector is still a vital non-oil growth driver and a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy, thanks to its vibrant population and fast adoption of mobile internet services.

Ruled by 4 major mobile operators, the telecoms industry is currently on a steady growth trajectory, as increasing smartphone penetration and investment in mobile internet networks supports a shift towards data-driven growth models. In Nigeria’s IT sector, government efforts to improve broadband penetration has started to gather steam, even if it’ll be very hard to achieve its ambitious mid-term expansion targets because of issues in deploying new fibre-optic infrastructure.

In summary, ICT development has grown rapidly in Nigeria since 1999, when Nigeria had only 400,000 fixed telephone lines and less than 200,000 regular internet users. In the year 2000, the government started to liberalise the sector and launched the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP), followed by the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) in 2003, and the rest is now history. Fast forward to 2021, networks in the country are doing everything to make life easier for their customers.

For instance, there will be days when you’ll want to place an important phone call to a friend or family, but you’ll be out of airtime. Everyone already knows about the regular borrowing package all networks have, however, how about letting the receiver pay for the phone call?

Well, it is very possible. The Pay4Me package for specific networks was made for special and emergency purposes, especially when the discussion is really urgent and there is no way to purchase airtime. However, be aware that there is a condition, which is, the user on the other end needs to agree to pay for the airtime before any conversation can happen.
