Difference between RAM and ROM – here’s what you need to know


Whenever we need or intend to buy a new technological device, such as a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, regardless of whether it is the latest top of the Android range or an iPhone, you always hear the words RAM and ROMs, which often create great confusion among less experienced users.

Although the terms are similar, and both are memories, RAM and ROM have totally different functions. Precisely for this reason in today’s guide, we will clarify what they really represent going to explain in detail the meaning of these components, which are fundamental for most technological devices.


What is RAM memory?

Many of you have asked at least once what RAM memory is and what it is used for- RAM, which stands for “Random Access Memory”, is a random access memory, of reading and writing, which is used only to temporarily store useful data to the device to use the various programs. Since it is a random access memory, it allows to pick up or write a single data in a given position without having to scroll all of them.

The RAM is used to provide the CPU, or the processor of the device, the memory necessary to perform any operation, such as running a program or an application. It is essential for the correct use of the device because the bigger it is, the more the phone or the PC will be fluid and fast in everyday use.

RAM is a volatile memory. This means that once the device is turned off automatically the data on the RAM will be erased, so they will be lost. On the market there are different types of RAM memory- they are distinguished by speed, energy consumption, and quantity. The most used in smartphones are RAM LPDDR.


What is ROM memory?

The ROM, acronym of “Read Only Memory”, is a memory (as the name suggests) read only- the data inside it can be read without the possibility of being deleted or modified even if, in particular cases, it is possible to force writing some cells.


Unlike RAM, ROM is a non-volatile memory, so when power is turned off, data is not lost. To give an example, in the field of mobile devices, the ROM contains the operating system and programs useful for making the smartphone work.

There are many types of ROM but, to avoid being too long, we will only indicate their name without going into the specific- MROM, which indicates a classic masked ROM, PROM, EPROM, and EEPROM. As you probably know – perhaps even unconsciously – an example of ROM are CD-ROMs and DVDs.
