Mastercard is planning to enter the cryptocurrency train and is ready to accept payments with this new type of money, in its system, sometime in the second half of 2021.

That said, if Tesla’s support and rumors that Apple is also considering allowing Bitcoin payments in the near future have made the currency “explode” in the market… Can you imagine what a hypothetical Mastercard support could do?

Therefore, in a new publication on its official website, the Vice President of the part of Mastercard most focused on virtual currencies (Raj Dhamodharan) explained that:

  • “This is a big change that also means a lot of work on our part. We will be very careful about the currencies that we will support, always taking into account our principles. Whatever your point of view on the subject, the truth is that virtual currencies are gaining more and more importance, and therefore, they cannot be ignored.”
  • “Furthermore, our philosophy on this topic is very simple, it’s all about choosing. We are not here to recommend using these coins. But if you want to use them, you can count on our support.”

However, Mastercard has not yet announced which currencies it will support on its gigantic network. But it is obvious that at least Bitcoin will be accepted.

As you may know, it was after Tesla’s announcement that Bitcoin gained a new popularity boost and started to climb the charts in a way never seen before. A trend that is expected to continue in 2021, as at the writing date of this article, the currency is stable at 39 thousand euros, a value that most likely no one would believe possible after the 2017/2018 crash.
